How does the digital zoom
10th August 2011
Digital zoom is a feature of many highly publicized digital cameras, especially point and shoot models. It ‘rare times when using this feature can be useful, but you must first understand what is going to run this and what are the tradeoffs.
Image resolution
An understanding of the image resolution is required before a detailed discussion on the digital zoom can occur. The image resolution is simply a measure of the number of pixels in an image. A pixel, every little point that makes an image and is usually expressed in units of megapixels, or millions of pixels. Typical modern digital cameras have a resolution of up to 5 10 megapixel, which means an image to the highest setting can provide up to 10 million pixels.
How to change resolution digital zoom
When using the digital zoom of a camera, hardware and software inside the device is to convert a subset of the pixels captured by the image sensor in a whole new way. Instead of an image that represents all data collected light, the image is composed of a part of this secondary information. This means that some data is lost, and more zoom, more information is lost. Although there are some tips for luxury pixel analysis to have an image that is the same size, no information is drastically reduced in the image and therefore its quality is inferior to a picture taken without digital zoom.
For an example of how this works, open an image in a simple editor such as paint. Cut a small portion of the photograph, and then paste it into an empty photo that has the same size as the original. You will be digitally zoomed cropped section and you will see an image that is much less strong, and pixilated.
Contrast with optical zoom
A camera that offers an optical zoom does something else. In this case, there is a series of optical funnels of light on the image sensor, and magnifies the light in the process. With an optical zoom allows you the same amount of information in an image because the pixels in the sensor used, but you can zoom in on image for more details. Optical zoom does nothing to reduce the image quality.
Digital zoom is rarely a useful feature for any camera. If you have an option to disable it, you’ll take photos of high quality and never sacrifices the information to try to gather details. You can digitally zoom in an image using graphics software on a computer after you have taken a picture, and the results are much better than anything that happens on camera. This method allows you to preserve the original image with all its dissolution.
